Description
Description: Cooking and meal preparation can be a meaningful way to stimulate the mind, encourage independence, and strengthen social bonds for elderly individuals with dementia. Engaging in familiar daily activities like these helps to reinforce memory, motor coordination, and decision-making skills, while also fostering a sense of achievement and connection. This program invites seniors with dementia to take the lead in planning and preparing simple dishes together with volunteers. Volunteers will support seniors to fully engage; purchasing ingredients together at a nearby supermarket, and cooking the dishes back at the centre. Volunteer Roles: Volunteers will accompany the elderly in the shopping and cooking sessions, offering encouragement and gentle support throughout the activity. They will assist in navigating the supermarket, checking items on the shopping list, and engaging in casual conversation to build meaningful connections. Volunteers will prioritise safety during cooking while encouraging the elderly to take the lead, fostering both cognitive and physical engagement. A briefing on communication skills and dementia care strategies will be held prior to the activity. Remarks: All volunteers must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. Friends or family members must also register and sign up separately.
