JCVT Connecting generations: Delivering gift packs to the elderly

"賽馬會眾心行善 JC VOLUNTEER TOGETHER" Funded by: Description: While traditional festivals in Hong Kong should be a time of celebration and family-togetherness, they can be a time of isolation and loneliness for the 150,000+ elderly in the city living alone. The city’s children and their families can play a vital role in connecting with the elderly during these important festivals by celebrating the occasion together. This sends a powerful message that the larger community cares for and remembers these seniors–and gives them the opportunity to share the memories and traditions they associate with these holidays. Preparing festival-themed snacks together is a wonderful way to celebrate in a meaningful way and foster enjoyment and conversation. Volunteer roles: After taking part in a short briefing and welcome from the elderly center, volunteers will also visit and deliver festival packages to the homes of the center's elderly members. Children taking part in this activity can practice skills of empathy, listening and turn-taking with their senior buddy, and learn from their parents’ role-modeling. This volunteer activity welcomes parents to bring their children to join together.
