Description
Description: Food waste and hunger remain pressing issues in our community, with surplus bread often discarded while many individuals face food insecurity. Green Hour Foundation, in collaboration with Embrace of Warmth Society, is dedicated to mitigating these challenges through sustainable, community-centred action. The Bun Run is a weekly surplus food collection programme aimed at rescuing excess bread from bakeries and delivering it directly to vulnerable groups such as homeless individuals and street cleaners in Hung Hom. This initiative not only addresses food waste but also helps alleviate hunger and social isolation among marginalised groups, fostering compassion and social connection. By volunteering with Green Hour Foundation, you support an innovative approach that empowers communities, strengthens social bonds, and contributes to a more sustainable and caring society. Volunteer Roles: Volunteers will first gather at Saint Honore Cake Shop at Fortune Metropolis in Hung Hom at 7:55 pm, and then collect surplus bread and cakes from partnering bakeries. Distribute collected food directly to people experiencing homelessness, street cleaners, and others in need. Engage with the service users through friendly conversation to build trust and reduce social stigma. Collaborate with fellow volunteers and Green Hour team to ensure smooth and efficient collection and distribution. Skills/Qualities Needed: Cantonese speakers are preferred but not required. Comfortable with evening outdoor activity and light physical work. Expected Outcomes: Volunteers will help reduce food waste and provide critical nourishment to vulnerable individuals while fostering community solidarity and breaking down barriers of social isolation. Requirements/Remarks: All volunteers attending this activity must be registered with HandsOn Hong Kong. Friends or family members wishing to join must register and sign up separately. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. Green Hour Foundation recommends volunteers to make a $100 donation to help support the purchase of monthly vegetarian lunchboxes for the elderly, laisee packet distribution and also to help them with the general running of the programme monthly.
